I am enraged. I just learned that Americans military families were left at Bahrain when the US attacked Iran just across the strait. Those families were not evacuated until long after the retaliatory strikes by Iran occurred. And of course most of the active duty members of those families could not be with their wives and children over months in various countries.
We were stationed in Germany during the cold war when the USSR could have attacked across the Fulda Gap at any moment. My husband was involved in drafting or revising the dependent evacuation plan for our tiny Caserne. Every military member who was a single parent or was in a military-military marriage had to designate a responsible civilian adult to evacuate with their children.
The idea that the US DoD could start a war just miles from unprotected dependents and have no plan for their safety in advance, and leave the families without their household effects for 7 months is appalling.
Congressional OVERSIGHT must be prompt, thorough snd unstinting. Accountability must occur and soon, and the families must be both compensated and provided with adequate treatment.
I am beyond disgusted by DoD’s flagrant disregard for the families under its care.
