Urgent: Cosponsor H. Res 1586
To: Rep. McCollum
From: A constituent in Saint Paul, MN
October 3
As your constituent, I urge you to cosponsor H. Res. 1586, a bipartisan resolution reaffirming the right of people with disabilities to live and receive services in their communities. Right now, people with disabilities are facing more and more cuts and other challenges that take away our ability to stay in our own homes. I myself am disabled, and I am terrified by what is happening.
H. Res. 1586 recognizes Congress’s longstanding commitment to community integration reflected in Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act which was affirmed in the Supreme Court's decision in Olmstead v. L.C. The resolution highlights that Congress has repeatedly affirmed that people with disabilities should receive services in the most integrated setting appropriate and that unnecessary segregation is a form of discrimination. In other words, Congress has said, and needs to keep saying, that being able to live in our own homes is a right.
At a time when the integration mandate faces new challenges, Congress should reaffirm that disabled people belong in their communities.
Please cosponsor H. Res. 1586 and help advance this important bipartisan resolution.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
