Protect disabled students' rights with Section 504 laws

To: Sen. Kennedy, Rep. Letlow, Sen. Cassidy

From: A constituent in Baton Rouge, LA

February 11, 2025

Section 504 is vital for safeguarding the rights of disabled children, including those with dyslexia and ADHD, to receive a free appropriate public education. The law mandates that schools receiving federal funds must provide accommodations and support services to ensure equal access to education for students with disabilities. In Louisiana, dismantling Section 504 would jeopardize the rights of thousands of children with dyslexia, ADHD, and other disabilities to receive the specialized instruction, assistive technologies, and classroom modifications they need to learn and thrive alongside their peers. Robbing these students of their legal protections under Section 504 would be an unconscionable violation of their civil rights and a betrayal of our commitment to inclusive education for all children, regardless of disability status.
