Feds Obstructing State Investigation into ICE Shootings

January 26

I am writing to demand you take immediate action to address the federal obstruction of Minnesota's investigation into the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. The U.S. Attorney's office has blocked the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension from investigating these deaths, denying state investigators access to case materials, scene evidence, and investigative interviews. I urge you to introduce emergency legislation establishing felony charges for any federal agent or official who obstructs state investigations, destroys evidence, or tampers with crime scenes involving federal law enforcement shootings. These charges must carry mandatory minimum sentences of at least ten years and cannot be subject to federal pardon. States must be allowed to investigate deaths that occur within state borders. BCA Superintendent Drew Evans confirmed his agency was forced to withdraw after initially being promised a joint investigation with the FBI. Governor Tim Walz has stated that federal officials, including the president, vice president, and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, have already made verifiably false statements about these cases. When those directing an investigation have prejudged the outcome, evidence preservation becomes critically suspect. Every day Minnesota investigators remain excluded increases the risk that evidence has been destroyed or manipulated. States must be allowed to establish an independent state forensic team with authority to preserve evidence in federal law enforcement shootings, with criminal penalties for anyone who interferes.
