My name is Heather Urquiza. I am one of your constituents here in Ocean County. I am also a TikTok creator with over 530,000 followers. I am a single mother, and TikTok is my job. I cannot express how disappointed I am in Congress, President Biden, and the Supreme Court for their decision — at all levels, time and time again — to ban TikTok.
I have been a TikTok creator for five years. It is my main source of income. It’s the way I pay my bills, the way I feed my children, the way I keep them clothed. I have worked hard to build a positive and uplifting community on the app. And now, thanks, in part, to you (either standing by and letting it happen because it was an Omnibus bill or by actively voting for it), this will all be stripped away from me.
Starting Sunday, I will be unemployed. However, since I am technically self employed, I cannot collect unemployment. I have no idea how I am going to pay my bills, feed my children, or keep us housed. But I am not alone. There are hundreds of thousands of people across America who will also be out of a job on Sunday. This is the very real consequence of your decisions. Those people who will be unemployed as of Sunday, along with the 170 million TikTok users are also, inconveniently for you, voters. It doesn’t matter if they’re Democrats or Republicans — those of us on TikTok are in agreement that this ban was the wrong course of action.
I am asking you to PLEASE reconsider your stance on TikTok. Please urge Congress to look a little closer at the app. Bring in experts (and actually listen to them). I think once you look at the facts, you’ll change your mind.
Thank you for your time & have a great weekend.
