STOP ICE - compare past administrations to Trump!
To: Sen. Scott, Rep. Lee, Sen. Moody
From: A constituent in Land O' Lakes, FL
January 31
am writing as a constituent of Florida to express serious concerns about the current trajectory of U.S. immigration enforcement policy and its impact on public safety, civil rights, and community trust. Recent reporting has highlighted multiple fatal shootings and violent incidents involving federal immigration enforcement agents — including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol — in Minneapolis and the surrounding area, resulting in the deaths of U.S. citizens and fueling nationwide protests and demands for accountability. In addition to these troubling events, I would like to share a comparison of deportation data from the last four U.S. presidents to illustrate how escalated enforcement approaches do *not necessarily correlate with less violence or greater success in achieving public safety goals: • Joe Biden (2021–present): ~0.5–1.1 million formal removals; ~4.4–4.7 million total deportations/expulsions/returns. • Donald Trump (2017–2021): ~1.2–1.3 million formal removals; ~1.5–2.1 million total deportations. • Barack Obama (2009–2017): ~3.0–3.2 million formal removals; ~5.2–5.3 million total deportations. • George W. Bush (2001–2009): ~2.0 million formal removals; ~10.3 million total deportations. These figures — distinguishing formal removals from broader deportation categories — show that administrations pursuing more aggressive enforcement strategies have not consistently achieved lower overall violence or better outcomes. Broad enforcement tactics, when paired with militarized operations and expanded border expulsions, appear to correlate with heightened conflict and community harm rather than improved public safety. (Estimates adapted from DHS and immigration data comparisons.) Furthermore, ongoing incidents in Minneapolis — including multiple shootings by federal agents that have sparked civil rights investigations — reveal a deep erosion of trust between communities and federal law enforcement. For these reasons, I respectfully urge you to consider the following policy changes: 1. Prioritize de-escalation and accountability in immigration enforcement operations to prevent unnecessary loss of life and protect civil liberties. 2. Support transparent investigations into all use of force incidents involving federal agents, with independent oversight. 3. Reevaluate enforcement strategies that rely heavily on militarized tactics rather than community-based solutions and humane immigration policy. Constituents deserve an immigration system that is effective, just, and safe for everyone — including U.S. citizens, immigrants, and the communities in which they live. Thank you for your attention to this important issue.
