Democracy Not AIPAC

To: Sen. Van Hollen, Sen. Alsobrooks, Rep. McClain Delaney

From: A verified voter in Frostburg, MD

April 21

I write as a constituent and citizen deeply committed to representative democracy. My purpose is to demand you, in the strongest possible terms, to refuse all campaign contributions from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and its affiliated super PACs. For those colleagues who have already accepted such funds, I call for their immediate return. AIPAC and its affiliated political action committees have poured hundreds of millions of dollars into federal elections. This level of spending by a single foreign-policy interest group distorts the democratic process and compromises the independence of elected officials. Members of Congress must answer to their constituents, not to the largest check deposited into their campaign accounts. Accepting AIPAC money carries serious consequences for democratic accountability. It creates reasonable doubt about whether your votes on matters involving Israel, Gaza, military aid, and United States foreign policy reflect the will of the people you represent or the interests of donors. The American public deserves legislators whose loyalty belongs, without question, to the constituents of their districts and states. I ask you to take the following concrete steps: Pledge, publicly and in writing, to refuse all future contributions from AIPAC and its affiliated super PACs. If you have already accepted such contributions, return those funds immediately and disclose the return publicly. Support legislation that closes super PAC loopholes allowing foreign-policy interest groups to exercise disproportionate influence over federal elections. Co-sponsor or support the DISCLOSE Act or similar transparency legislation requiring full donor disclosure in all federal campaign spending. The integrity of our democratic institutions rests on elected officials who remain free from undue foreign-policy influence. A government that serves its people must be funded by its people, not by concentrated special interests whose primary concern lies beyond American borders. I expect a substantive written response detailing your position on this matter and the specific steps you commit to taking. I will share your response with my community and continue to follow your record on campaign finance and foreign-policy accountability.
