You Work for a Coward. You Don’t Have to Be One Too.

To: Sen. Lee

From: A constituent in South Jordan, UT

June 17, 2025

I’m writing to you, the staffer reading this, because I know Senator Lee does not care. I know you probably didn’t start working for Senator Lee to defend violence, conspiracy, or cruelty. I doubt you joined this office with the dream of amplifying the ugliest voices in American politics. And yet—here you are, working for a man who just openly minimized a horrifying political assassination. A man who posts gleeful, taunting remarks while Americans grieve. You’ve seen the posts. You’ve read the replies. You know exactly how vile it is. You may tell yourself it’s just politics. That you’re doing important behind-the-scenes work. That it’s better to be a steady hand in a chaotic office. But at a certain point—and this is it—those rationalizations collapse under the weight of complicity. There is no noble mission here. No deeper game being played. You are working for someone who regularly chooses cruelty over decency, spectacle over statesmanship, and provocation over principle. And when that choice fuels hate, division, or violence, he doesn’t flinch. He doubles down. And you help him do it. Ask yourself: What does continuing to work here say about you? What does it cost your integrity, your future, your name? You’re not invisible. Future employers see this. Your family sees this. And whether or not you say it out loud, you feel it, too. That knot in your stomach? That shame? That’s your conscience, begging you to listen. You still have a chance to walk away. To say, “No more.” To be one of the few political staffers who chose principle over a paycheck, decency over allegiance, truth over power. That’s not weakness—it’s courage. Real courage. I believe that is what Utah is built on, and while Senator Lee has abandoned Utah values, you don’t have to. If your boss has no line he won’t cross, you have to draw your own. If you stay, you help him. If you leave, you send a message louder than any speech he’ll ever give. Resign. Speak out. Be better than the sad, depraved man you work for.
