Protecting the Integrity and Independence of Indiana University: Oppose HB1001

To: Sen. Yoder, Rep. Hall, Gov. Braun

From: A verified voter in Bloomington, IN

April 25

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the latest version of the Indiana state budget bill (HB1001). As a concerned citizen and supporter of higher education, I am deeply troubled by the provisions in this bill that target our universities, particularly Indiana University.

The proposed changes to the composition of Indiana University's Board of Trustees, which would grant the governor full control over trustee appointments, undermine the principles of shared governance and academic freedom. This shift from alumni-elected trustees to gubernatorial appointments threatens the independence of one of our state's premier public universities and diminishes the diverse perspectives that are crucial for effective decision-making.

Additionally, the reduction in fiscal resources allocated to Indiana University will have a detrimental impact on the quality of education and research conducted at the institution. These cuts will hinder the university's ability to attract and retain top faculty, support innovative research, and provide students with the resources they need to succeed.

Furthermore, the bill's provisions that weaken faculty governance by introducing post-tenure evaluations that can lead to dismissal for "non-productivity" are alarming. This approach not only threatens academic freedom but also undermines the stability and integrity of the faculty, who are essential to the university's mission of providing high-quality education and fostering intellectual growth.

I urge you to reconsider these harmful provisions and work towards a budget that supports and strengthens our higher education institutions. Indiana University has long been a beacon of excellence and innovation, and it is imperative that we protect its autonomy, financial stability, and academic integrity.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your response and hope that you will take action to ensure the continued success and independence of Indiana University.
