I am writing to urge you to oppose any legislation that would enable national book bans in the United States. Book bans, whether imposed at the federal, state, or local level, undermine the very freedoms that define our democracy. Libraries and schools should be spaces where readers encounter diverse ideas, not where access is narrowed by political pressure or ideological gatekeeping. I know firsthand that intellectual freedom is essential to discovery. Every breakthrough in science began with someone reading something unfamiliar, controversial, or even heretical at the time. Banning books doesn't protect people, it starves curiosity and erodes the foundation of informed citizenship. I ask you to: • Oppose any federal legislation that restricts access to books in schools and public libraries. • Support protections for librarians and educators who face retaliation for providing access to diverse materials. • Defend the right of every reader, especially young readers, to explore ideas freely. We can trust people to think for themselves. Please stand on the side of that trust.
