Reinstate Dr. Carla Hayden, protect Library of Congress integrity

To: Rep. Foxx, Sen. Budd, Sen. Tillis

From: A constituent in Greensboro, NC

May 23, 2025

The recent firing of Dr. Carla Hayden as Librarian of Congress is an unjust and troubling action. As the first woman and African American to hold this prestigious position, her dismissal appears to be motivated by biases related to her gender and race, as well as her admirable support for diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Dr. Hayden is a highly respected and accomplished librarian who has served the Library of Congress with distinction. Her removal threatens the independence and integrity of the Library's sub-agencies, which provide vital confidential legal advice to members of Congress and help police misconduct by lawmakers. This decision undermines the core values of our democratic institutions. I urge you to take immediate action to reinstate Dr. Carla Hayden as Librarian of Congress and protect the Library from partisan interference that could compromise its critical role.
