DEFEND FREEDOM OF THE PRESS

To: Sen. Curtis, Sen. Lee, Rep. Owens

From: A constituent in West Jordan, UT

March 16

On March 14, FCC Chair Brendan Carr posted this (in part): "Broadcasters that are running hoaxes and news distortions—also known as the fake news—have a chance now to correct course before their license renewals come up." This is a barely concealed threat to free speech and freedom of the press--more than implying that if news outlets do not provide favorable coverage to the present administration, they will be punished or even silenced. As your constituent, I demand that you respond to this as the unconstitutional action that it is. We are not flirting with authoritarianism--this IS authoritarianish, Soviet-style, and it is unAmerican, or at least inconsistent with our greatest hopes of who we should be. This requires a response from you, as a co-equal member of the legislative branch. Do not let this pass without asserting the constitutional rights to freedom of speech and freedome of the press. Do it and do it right now.
