SB1 tax hike on working families

To: Sen. Dernulc, Rep. Slager

From: A constituent in Schererville, IN

April 10, 2025

Senate Bill 1 appears to disproportionately benefit businesses over working families. While it claims to provide property tax relief of up to $300 annually for homeowners, it also imposes income taxes of up to 4.1% on top of existing state and federal taxes. This additional burden outweighs the modest property tax savings for many Hoosiers. Furthermore, the bill extends preferential treatment to corporations while leaving ordinary citizens with mere crumbs. In essence, it amounts to a regressive tax hike masquerading as relief. Recognizing these inequities, House Democrats rightly opposed a plan that fails to prioritize the financial well-being of working-class constituents across the state. A more balanced approach is needed to ensure fairness and avoid unduly burdening those who can least afford it.
