Support for Obergefell v. Hodges and Marriage Equality
To: Justices Court
From: A constituent in Austin, TX
August 12
I am writing to express my strong support for the Court’s landmark decision in Obergefell v. Hodges (2015), which recognized the constitutional right of same-sex couples to marry. This ruling not only affirmed the principles of liberty and equality enshrined in our Constitution, but also upheld the dignity and humanity of millions of Americans.
The decision rightly recognized that the Fourteenth Amendment’s guarantees of due process and equal protection extend to all people, regardless of sexual orientation. Marriage is a profound commitment and a fundamental right, central to personal freedom, family stability, and societal recognition. Denying that right to same-sex couples would perpetuate stigma, harm, and inequality—contrary to the very values our legal system is meant to protect.
In the years since Obergefell, the positive impact has been undeniable. Families have gained security through legal recognition, children have enjoyed the stability of having both parents recognized under the law, and communities have benefited from a more inclusive understanding of love and commitment. The decision has not diminished marriage; rather, it has strengthened the institution by affirming its universality and adaptability to the realities of modern life.
I commend the Court for its courage and clarity in affirming that the Constitution protects the rights of same-sex couples to marry. This ruling stands as a vital precedent ensuring that our nation continues to move toward justice, equality, and freedom for all.
