Pay Our Bills and Cut Defense Spending Instead

To: Rep. Maloy, Sen. Lee, Sen. Curtis

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

April 23

The United States government must pay its bills and meet its existing obligations. Defaulting would be catastrophic for our economy and our standing in the world. This is your responsibility. Instead of threatening default or playing political games with our credit, cut defense spending. The Pentagon budget has ballooned to over $800 billion while failing basic audits year after year. We spend more on defense than the next ten countries combined, much of it on wasteful contracts and weapons systems the military doesn't even want. Defaulting weakens the United States and hands our adversaries a victory without them firing a shot. It would spike interest rates, crash markets, and threaten payments to veterans, Social Security recipients, and federal workers. You were elected to govern responsibly. Pay our bills and find savings in the bloated defense budget instead of manufacturing a crisis.
