Wisconsinites Oppose Genocide—Don’t Silence Us with IHRA

To: Rep. Mayadev, Gov. Evers, Sen. Roys

From: A constituent in Madison, WI

September 22

I urge you to reject any legislation codifying the IHRA definition of antisemitism in Wisconsin. While combating antisemitism is vital, this bill dangerously conflates criticism of Israeli policy with hate speech. It opens the door for peaceful protest to be prosecuted as Disorderly Conduct—and even as a hate crime—especially under Wisconsin’s vague statutes. Codifying IHRA hands right-wing prosecutors a tool to silence dissent. Example 7 and 10 of the definition label criticism of apartheid and comparisons to past atrocities as antisemitic. That’s not justice—it’s censorship. Have you consulted hate crime prosecutors or defense attorneys? I have. They’re alarmed. Don’t criminalize conscience. Protect free speech. Reject this bill.
