Demand Action Against ICE Operations and Support for Minneapolis Residents
To: Gov. Hobbs
From: A verified voter in Tucson, AZ
February 9
Since early January, Minneapolis has experienced an occupation by thousands of paramilitary ICE agents whose operations have terrorized residents through excessive force, racial profiling, and unconstitutional behavior. Reports from the community describe shootings, invasions of schools and places of worship, and violence against peaceful protesters exercising their First Amendment rights. The Trump administration has refused to investigate these alleged abuses, even as local officials work to counter federal claims and protect their constituents.
Minneapolis residents have banded together to protect their neighbors, but they should not face this crisis alone. What is happening in Minnesota represents a dangerous precedent that threatens communities across the country. ICE has expanded hiring while allegedly diminishing standards for recruiting and training agents, and similar operation surges are already occurring in other cities.
I am asking you to take two immediate actions. First, publicly support the people of Minnesota and Governor Walz's efforts to push back against these operations. Their resistance deserves vocal backing from leaders nationwide. Second, take preventive legal and administrative measures to protect our state from similar ICE occupation. This includes exploring state authority to limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, protecting schools and places of worship from raids, and establishing oversight mechanisms for any federal operations within our borders.
The atrocities alleged in Minneapolis cannot be ignored or normalized. If state leaders remain silent, these operations will expand unchecked into more communities. I need to know that you will stand with Minneapolis residents and take concrete steps to prevent this from happening here. What specific actions will you take to oppose these ICE operations and protect our state's residents from similar federal overreach?
