Tell tech companies: No rug-pulling for Internet-connected product support!

To: Sen. Amato, Assembly Member Myhre, Assembly Member Rumpf

From: A constituent in Forked River, NJ

June 8

The New York State Assembly recently passed a bill (A.10132-B) aiming to regulate the disclosure of "expiration dates" for Internet-connected devices. The proposed mandate is for a company selling such a product to provide a specific timeline for updates and support and to disclose how the device's operation changes after that date. Currently the New Jersey Cybersecurity and Communications Intergration Cell (NJCCIC) is tasked with reminding buyers to investigate this information themselves, which is unfair given that the information is generally held by the manufacturer, that is, the one entity most likely to benefit from the ignorance of the buyer. I urge you to consider drafting and/or sponsoring a bill for New Jersey similar to New York State Assembly Bill A.10132-B to help protect your constituents against consumer-unfriendly practices in this increasingly connected world.
