Don't allow federalization of voting administration!
To: Sen. Kim, Rep. Kean, Sen. Booker
From: A constituent in Basking Ridge, NJ
February 3
Trump told Republicans to NATIONALIZE the administration of voting in at least 15 states, telling them they should “take over the voting” because, in his telling, elections are corrupt and rigged. He made these remarks on a podcast hosted by a former FBI official, repeating the same baseless claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him and illegal voters are flooding the system. Normalizing authoritarian thinking used to be something we warned about in other countries. Today it’s coming straight from the American president. Under the Constitution, states — not the federal government — decide how elections are run. The Times, Places and Manner of voting is theirs. Trump’s proposal would be a direct clash with that system. But Trump didn’t couch this in abstract legalese. He framed it as necessary because “states are crooked” and because undocumented immigrants are supposedly being brought in to vote illegally — a conspiracy theory that has been repeatedly debunked and for which no evidence has been found. This isn’t just another rant. It’s a strategic escalation in a broader campaign to transform the very mechanisms of democratic governance into tools of fascist control. Think about what that means: If elections can be “nationalized” at the whim of a political party when it’s losing, then the decentralized election system — one of the very guardrails of American democracy — collapses. You’re no longer debating policy or competing for hearts and minds, you’re fighting for control of the machinery that counts votes. This is the logical endpoint of years of election denialism, voter suppression bills, and federal overreach masked as “integrity.” Now the call isn’t just to question elections — it’s to replace state authority outright. That’s how autocracies start: with delegitimizing the process itself. Even prominent Republicans recoiled at the remarks, noting they violate fundamental legal norms and constitutional boundaries. What Trump proposes isn’t merely unorthodox, it’s illegal. And make no mistake, this plays straight into a broader GOP strategy to consolidate power no matter the public will. Across the country, Republican-led states have passed laws that shift election control from local boards to partisan legislatures, blatantly altering how ballots are counted and certified. This isn’t a distant threat. It’s happening now, in real time, from the highest office in the land. And we need to treat it with urgency, not as another news cycle, not as partisan shouting, but as a real, structural threat to democracy itself.
