The Pentagon also spent lavishly on luxury food: $6.9 million on lobster tail, $2 million on Alaskan king crab, $15.1 million on ribeye steak, plus $124,000 on ice cream machines and $139,000 on doughnuts. Meanwhile, millions of Americans lost SNAP benefits during the longest government shutdown in U.S. history — with Republicans pushing new restrictions on food assistance. In just the last five days of September, the Pentagon pushed out $50.1 billion in grants and contracts — more than the entire annual military budgets of Canada and Mexico combined.
