Urgent: Oversight and Accountability for ICE
To: Rep. Smith
From: A verified voter in Seattle, WA
January 24
I am a constituent from Seattle,WA writing to urge you to take immediate action to uphold the Constitution and impose meaningful oversight on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Today’s killing of an innocent bystander connected to ICE activity is horrifying and completely unacceptable. Regardless of the outcome of any investigation, the death of an uninvolved civilian underscores the grave risks of aggressive and insufficiently restrained enforcement practices. The loss of human life can never be treated as collateral damage in a constitutional democracy.
This incident is not isolated from broader concerns about ICE’s conduct. Across the country, reports of detentions without due process, excessive force, and enforcement actions that disregard basic civil liberties point to a dangerous erosion of constitutional norms. No federal agency should be permitted to operate as though the Bill of Rights is optional or inconvenient.
I urge you to:
* Demand a full, transparent, and independent investigation into any ICE activity resulting in civilian injury or death
* Support strong congressional oversight, accountability measures, and clear limits on enforcement practices
* Oppose policies that violate due process, equal protection, and fundamental constitutional rights
This is not a partisan issue. It is about the rule of law, the proper limits of government power, and the obligation of the state to protect human life. I expect my elected representatives to act decisively when those principles are threatened.
Please use your authority to ensure that ICE is held accountable and that constitutional protections are respected in all enforcement actions.
I will be closely watching your response and your actions on this issue.
