Support S.J. #35 - Protect LGBTQ+ Rights in CT Constitution

To: Rep. Dillon, Sen. Winfield

From: A constituent in New Haven, CT

February 4

As your constituent, I am writing to urge your strong support for Senate Joint Resolution No. 35, which would amend Connecticut's Constitution to explicitly protect against discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and related healthcare. The urgency of enshrining these protections in our state constitution has never been greater. The new federal administration has already taken unprecedented steps to strip away LGBTQ+ rights and protections, including signing executive orders that only recognize two biological sexes, revoking transgender individuals' ability to update federal identification documents, and moving to ban gender-affirming care in federal facilities. As these federal protections are systematically dismantled, Connecticut must stand firm as a beacon of progress and human dignity. Your leadership is crucial in ensuring these fundamental rights remain secure in our state, regardless of shifting political winds at the federal level. The threat extends beyond just government action. The administration's rhetoric and policies are emboldening hate groups and extremists to more openly discriminate against LGBTQ+ individuals. Meanwhile, social media platforms are rolling back their already limited protections against anti-LGBTQ+ harassment and misinformation, creating an increasingly hostile environment for these vulnerable communities. Connecticut has long been a leader in protecting the rights and dignity of all its residents. By supporting S.J. #35, you can help strengthen these protections at a time when they are under unprecedented assault. This amendment will ensure that all Connecticut residents--including your constituents--can live authentically and access the healthcare they need without fear of discrimination. I urge you to: • Voice your support for S.J. #35 to the Government Administration and Elections Committee • Work with your colleagues to build the supermajority support needed for passage • Vote in favor of this crucial constitutional amendment when it comes before the legislature Your leadership on this issue matters greatly to me and many other constituents who believe in equal rights and protections for all Connecticut residents. Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to your response on this important issue.
