Launch a congressional investigation into the IRS service collapse caused by DOGE's workforce cuts. This isn't bureaucratic inefficiency — it's a deliberate dismantling of a public agency that is now failing millions of taxpayers who did everything right.
The numbers are damning. The Taxpayer Advocate Service found that live operators answered only 30% of calls from taxpayers who owed money between January and April 18, with average hold times of 45 minutes. Nearly 40% of calls were disconnected — mostly by the IRS itself. Unprocessed correspondence doubled from 3.8 million to 7 million in a single year. Meanwhile, Frank Bisignano told Congress this was "the most successful filing season in IRS history." Someone is not telling the truth, and Congress needs to find out who.
These cuts are projected to cost nearly $900 billion in uncollected revenue over the next decade. The people hardest hit are low-income families, the elderly, and non-English speakers — taxpayers who depend on the Earned Income Tax Credit and child tax credit and have no lawyer to spend five hours a day on hold for them. Hold a hearing, subpoena the data, and demand accountability from Bisignano. The IRS cannot function as a threat machine that sends garnishment warnings while refusing to answer its phones.
