Protect IMLS funding for libraries nationwide

Libraries are critical institutions that foster education, community engagement, and intellectual freedom. Federal funding through the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) helps ensure all Americans have access to these invaluable resources. The recent executive order threatens the very existence of IMLS, putting library services at risk across the nation. This misguided action undermines the intent of Congress, which appropriated funding for IMLS through September 2025 with the continuing resolution signed into law on March 14th. Libraries play a vital role in promoting literacy, lifelong learning, and the free exchange of ideas – cornerstones of a thriving democracy. Eliminating IMLS would deal a severe blow to communities nationwide, jeopardizing technology training for job seekers, resources for people with disabilities, library services for older Americans, summer reading programs for families, and more. These essential programs draw just a tiny fraction of the federal budget yet yield immense societal benefits. I urge you to take immediate action to overturn this executive order and protect federal funding for IMLS. Libraries are indispensable civic assets that enrich us all by providing access to information, resources, and opportunities. Ensuring their vitality through robust funding upholds our shared values of education, intellectual freedom, and an informed citizenry. Do not allow this administration's reckless actions to undermine such a crucial public good.
