Oppose the Gas Tax Holiday — It's a Gift to Trump, Not Voters

To: Sen. Kim, Sen. Booker, Rep. Pallone

From: A constituent in Leonardo, NJ

March 11

I'm writing to urge you to oppose the Gas Prices Relief Act and any similar gas tax holiday proposals. This is a political own-goal. Gas prices are spiking because of a war the Trump administration chose to start — a war that has effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz and destabilized global oil markets. Suspending the federal gas tax does nothing to address that. And as Governor Newsom's office correctly pointed out, there's real evidence that past gas tax holidays — like Florida's — largely lined the pockets of oil companies rather than consumers. Worse, Republicans have already said they won't move on this without Trump's blessing. So Democrats are handing Trump a ready-made win that he will take full credit for, while taking on the political risk of voting for it, getting nothing in return, and doing little to actually help working families. If you want to help people struggling with gas prices right now, put the blame squarely where it belongs: on the administration's reckless decision to go to war with Iran. That's the message. Chasing a tax gimmick that may never even pass just muddies it. Please vote no.
