I am writing to urge you to vote NO on House Bill 798. Our state faces pressing economic and educational challenges. Instead of fixing them, this bill introduces big-government mandates that will harm our economy, waste public resources, and disrupt our communities.
HB 798 is wrong for Ohio for three clear reasons:
1. It wastes time on performative politics. Ohioans want lawmakers focused on real challenges like good jobs, safe neighborhoods, and strong schools. Instead, this bill forces state regulation into everyday spaces. Pushed by an unrepresentative, gerrymandered statehouse, it focuses on manufactured issues rather than the actual, day-to-day priorities of Ohio families.
2. It introduces a sweeping solution to a non-existent problem. Public policy should be built on evidence, not fear. Extensive safety data from law enforcement institutes and public policy researchers shows ZERO statistical evidence of public safety threats from transgender individuals using facilities that match their gender identity. Law enforcement consistently notes that criminal behavior in restrooms is already illegal under existing state statutes. This bill invents a crisis that doesn't exist.
3. It creates expensive legal liabilities and actively endangers Ohioans. Because the bill addresses a phantom threat, its real-world impact will only be negative. HB 798 opens the floodgates for frivolous lawsuits against our schools, universities, government offices, and local workplaces, costing taxpayers and businesses money. Furthermore, safety data shows that forcing people into the wrong facilities actually increases harassment and violence against transgender workers and students who are just trying to live their lives in peace.
Good leaders focus on solving real problems, not creating new legal liabilities for our communities and putting neighbors at risk. Please stand up for practical, evidence-based leadership and reject HB 798.
