I am writing to express my strong opposition to H.R. 276, the Gulf of America Act, which proposes renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.” This legislation is an unnecessary expenditure of taxpayer funds and detracts from addressing pressing national issues.
According to the Congressional Budget Office, implementing this name change would cost federal agencies up to $500,000 to update documents and maps . Beyond the financial implications, this unilateral renaming disregards over 400 years of historical and international recognition of the Gulf of Mexico . Such a move could strain diplomatic relations with neighboring countries and international bodies that continue to recognize the original name.
Furthermore, this initiative appears to be a symbolic gesture lacking substantive benefits for American citizens. At a time when our nation faces significant challenges—such as economic recovery, healthcare access, and infrastructure needs—it’s imperative that legislative efforts focus on policies that deliver tangible improvements to the lives of Americans.
I urge you to oppose H.R. 276 and prioritize legislation that addresses the real and immediate needs of our country.
