De-escalate Trade War Through Dialogue, Avoid Protectionism
To: Rep. Owens
From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT
March 4
The decision to impose steep tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China threatens to spark a damaging global trade war that could severely harm the US economy. This tit-for-tat exchange of tariffs does nothing to address the root issues and will only lead to higher costs for American consumers and businesses. It is in everyone's interest to de-escalate tensions and negotiate fair trade agreements through diplomacy rather than unilateral, combative actions. Tariffs are ultimately self-defeating, disrupting supply chains, provoking retaliation from trade partners, raising prices, and stifling economic growth. The current course risks plunging us back into the disastrous protectionism of the 1930s that exacerbated the Great Depression. I urge you to reconsider this reckless path of escalating tariffs and instead pursue a rules-based trading system that benefits all nations through constructive dialogue and compromise. Avoiding a destructive trade war must be the priority to safeguard American jobs, prosperity, and global stability.
