"Americans Can’t Afford Insulin — But We Can Afford Political Vanity Projects?
To: Rep. Simpson
From: A constituent in Pocatello, ID
July 28
Dear Representative Simpson,
I am writing as a constituent to express my opposition to any proposal to rename the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts after former First Lady Melania Trump. I want to be clear that my concern is not about Mrs. Trump personally, but rather about the priorities this move seems to reflect at a time when our country is facing urgent, unmet needs.
It is deeply troubling that our federal government has decided to cut essential healthcare services and jeopardize the well-being of millions of Americans while simultaneously entertaining symbolic gestures that serve little public purpose and come with unnecessary costs. To many working-class Americans, these actions feel like a slap in the face.
Our tax dollars should go toward programs that help people live healthier, more secure lives—not vanity projects meant to flatter those in power. The Kennedy Center is a historic institution named after a president who symbolized service and public good. Changing its name for political reasons would undermine its legacy and misuse taxpayer resources (something you claim to strongly oppose only until you feel it will get you ahead politically).
I urge you to oppose any effort to rename the Kennedy Center or support similar measures that prioritize politics over people.
