An Open Letter

I'm a constituent here in South Carolina, and I'm writing because I'm angry, and honestly, I'm starting to lose faith in the people who are supposed to be representing me. The administration's decision to sanction the International Criminal Court is what finally pushed me to write. When I heard Secretary Rubio say the U.S. would take the court apart "brick by brick," I couldn't believe it. This is a court that exists to go after people who commit genocide and war crimes. Whatever you think of it, threatening to destroy it isn't diplomacy. It's bullying. I get that there are real disagreements about the ICC's jurisdiction. Reasonable people can argue about that. But arguing is one thing. Trying to intimidate and dismantle a court is something else entirely. What bothers me even more is how quiet Congress has been. It feels like this president does whatever he wants out of grudges and spite, and almost nobody in Congress is willing to push back. Cruelty is being sold to us as strength, and revenge is being sold as justice. That's not what the presidency should look like, and I don't think most Americans really believe it should. So where are you? Your oath is to the Constitution and to the people you represent, not to whoever happens to be in the White House. At some point, staying silent starts to look a lot like going along with it. We can't keep telling the rest of the world we stand for justice and the rule of law, then turn around and attack a court the moment it becomes inconvenient for us or our friends. You can't demand accountability from everyone else while acting like you're above it. I'm not asking you to defend every decision the ICC makes. I'm asking you to recognize the difference between disagreeing with a court and trying to bully it out of existence, and to have the courage to say so out loud. Specifically, I'd like you to: • Speak publicly about these sanctions • Push back on the administration's threats against the ICC • Support real congressional oversight of how sanctions are being used against international courts I'd really appreciate an actual response, not a form letter, telling me where you stand and what you think Congress should do. People will remember what their representatives did during this time. They'll also remember what they let happen without saying a word.
