Stand Up to Trump’s Executive Overreach and Defend the Constitution

To: Sen. Kaine, Sen. Warner

From: A constituent in Charlottesville, VA

July 9, 2025

I’m writing with deep concern about President Trump’s escalating misuse of executive power and the Supreme Court’s recent ruling limiting federal courts from issuing nationwide injunctions, which only further clears the path for his authoritarian ambitions. The idea that a president could strip birthright citizenship, something enshrined in the 14th Amendment, through executive order should alarm every American. Yet Trump has made clear he intends to try exactly that. And now, with the Court’s decision making it harder for federal courts to block such sweeping, unconstitutional actions, the guardrails of our democracy are dangerously eroding. If Trump can undo constitutional rights with the stroke of a pen, what comes next? Is nothing sacred? The principle of birthright citizenship is a cornerstone of American identity and equality—it cannot be subject to political whims or extremist ideology. I’m urging you: please speak out even louder. Congress must be an active check on executive overreach and an unwavering defender of our Constitution. That means not only opposing any attempts to revoke birthright citizenship, but also pushing back against judicial rulings that diminish the power of the courts to protect our rights nationwide. History will remember who stood up in this moment. I hope you’ll be among those who rise to the challenge.
