Uphold the constitution, stop executive overreach

To: Sen. Budd, Rep. Rouzer, Sen. Tillis

From: A constituent in Wilmington, NC

February 14, 2025

We, the undersigned citizens of the United States, write to you with urgent concerns regarding the unlawful access and misuse of personal data belonging to American citizens. Reports indicate that Elon Musk and an entity known as the Department of Government Efficiency—which has not been authorized by Congress—are exerting control over critical government institutions, including the U.S. Treasury and the Social Security Administration. These actions, if unchecked, represent a direct threat to democracy, privacy, and the economic security of millions of Americans. Elon Musk was not elected by the people of the United States, nor has Congress granted him or any private entity the authority to manage or interfere with government agencies. The consolidation of such power into the hands of unelected individuals undermines the principles of democracy and public accountability. If these reports are accurate, they amount to an unacceptable breach of the rule of law and must be addressed immediately. Furthermore, we are deeply alarmed by recent statements from Vice President, J.D. Vance, who has claimed that the judicial branch does not have the authority to hinder the power of the presidency. This is a dangerous sentiment that directly contradicts the fundamental principles of our constitutional democracy. The system of checks and balances exists to prevent the consolidation of power and to ensure that no one individual or branch of government operates beyond the rule of law. Such rhetoric sets a dangerous precedent that, if left unchallenged, could erode the very foundations of our democracy. We demand an immediate congressional investigation and action on the following: 1. Unauthorized Access to Government Systems – Any efforts by private individuals or unconfirmed entities to seize control of public institutions must be exposed and addressed. 2. Violations of Privacy and Data Protections – If personal financial or Social Security information has been accessed without lawful authority, those responsible must be held accountable. 3. Threats to Democratic Governance – Congress must assert its authority to prevent any individual from circumventing democratic oversight in matters of national security and public administration. 4. Defense of Checks and Balances – Immediate congressional reaffirmation of the role of the judiciary in upholding the Constitution and preventing executive overreach. Congress must act now to protect the rights of the American people. The rule of law cannot be subverted by wealthy individuals acting without accountability, nor can we allow dangerous rhetoric to weaken the separation of powers that defines our democracy. We urge you to take immediate steps to investigate these reports, ensure transparency, and uphold the integrity of the United States government.
