Block Sable Offshore's Attempt to Seize National Park Lands to Escape Accountability
To: Rep. Vargas
From: A verified voter in Chula Vista, CA
July 27
Block any provision in HB8800 or any other legislation that would allow Sable Offshore to seize lands from national parks as a mechanism to escape criminal charges and a multi-billion dollar fine. This is not a defense issue — it is a corporate bailout dressed up in a must-pass bill, and it should not survive a single vote.
Sable Offshore is facing serious criminal liability and a massive financial penalty for good reason. Allowing the company to use eminent domain or any other land-seizure authority over protected public lands to sidestep that accountability would set a dangerous precedent: that corporations can buy their way out of criminal consequences by attaching riders to legislation. National parks belong to the public, not to oil companies looking for an escape hatch.
Vote no on any amendment, rider, or provision that grants Sable Offshore access to national park lands or shields it from the legal consequences it is currently facing. The law should apply equally — and no defense authorization bill should be the vehicle for letting a corporation off the hook.
