Move forward with a vacancy tax on empty storefronts, lots, and homes. Corporations are sitting on idle properties while Angelenos struggle to find affordable places to live and work. Leaving land and buildings vacant is a choice, and right now there's no financial consequence for making it. A vacancy tax changes that calculus. If holding out costs money, owners have a real reason to rent, sell, or develop. The City Council is already exploring this measure for the November ballot — put it there and let voters decide. Empty properties are a drain on neighborhoods. It's time to make vacancy expensive.
