Protect Virginia families' healthcare and food assistance, not tax cuts
To: Rep. Kiggans
From: A constituent in Virginia Beach, VA
February 26
The vote by Rep. Kiggans and all Virginia House Republicans in favor of the budget resolution is a betrayal of Virginia families. This resolution paves the way for devastating cuts to critical programs like Medicaid and SNAP that provide healthcare and food assistance to millions of Virginians. It strips away $880 billion from Medicaid over the next decade, putting the health coverage of 1.5 million Virginians at risk, including over 630,000 who would be automatically disenrolled even with a 1% cut to Medicaid expansion funding. It also cuts $230 billion from SNAP, which could deprive Virginia families of $480 million in food benefits each year. These draconian cuts are being proposed solely to fund tax breaks for the wealthiest individuals and corporations, reflecting misguided priorities that put profits over people. Virginians overwhelmingly want their representatives to protect programs like Medicaid and SNAP, not gut them for tax handouts to the rich. This reckless budget betrays the needs of hardworking families across the commonwealth.
