URGENT: Condemnation of Federal Violence in Minneapolis and Call for Oversight
To: Sen. Kaine, Rep. Beyer, Sen. Warner
From: A constituent in Arlington, VA
January 24
I am writing to you today as your constituent in Virginia to express my absolute horror and strongest possible condemnation regarding the fatal shooting of a resident by federal agents in Minneapolis this morning, January 24, 2026.
According to reports from the Washington Post and eyewitness accounts, this incident marks the second fatal shooting by federal law enforcement in that city in less than three weeks, following the killing of Renée Good on January 7. The escalation of violence by federal agents—operating under "Operation Metro Surge"—is a stain on our justice system and a terrifying overreach of federal power.
The details emerging from today’s incident are sickening: video appears to show agents wrestling a man to the ground before multiple shots were fired. Furthermore, the reported use of flash-bangs, chemical irritants, and mocking behavior by federal officers toward grieving community members is a betrayal of the oath to protect and serve. These are not the actions of a disciplined law enforcement body; they are the actions of an occupying force that is operating without transparency or regard for human life.
As my representative, you have a moral and legislative duty to act when federal agencies operate outside the bounds of constitutional policing. I urge you to:
1 Publicly condemn the use of lethal force by federal agents in Minneapolis and demand an immediate cessation of these aggressive federal operations.
2 Demand an independent Department of Justice investigation that is fully transparent to the public and local officials, rather than allowing federal agencies to investigate themselves.
3 Support legislation to mandate body-worn cameras for all federal agents and to restrict the deployment of federal "surge" forces into American cities against the will of local and state leadership.
4 Exercise your oversight authority to hold the Department of Homeland Security and the current administration accountable for the "generational trauma" being inflicted on these communities.
Virginia must not remain silent while federal agents kill American citizens and residents in the streets of our sister states. Silence is complicity. I look forward to hearing what specific steps you will take to address this crisis of federal accountability.
