Resolve Shutdown and Extend ACA Credits to Protect Americans
To: Sen. Lee, Rep. Maloy, Sen. Curtis
From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT
October 27
The ongoing government shutdown, now in its 26th day, is causing significant harm to our nation's security, economy, and the well-being of countless Americans. As your constituent, I urge you to take immediate action to end this crisis and return to the crucial work of protecting the American people, including extending the Affordable Care Act (ACA) credits.
The impacts of this shutdown are far-reaching and severe. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has warned of increasing flight delays and cancellations due to staffing shortages in air traffic control towers, jeopardizing both travel safety and our economy. Essential federal services are being disrupted, including health data collection and the distribution of SNAP benefits, which millions of vulnerable Americans rely on for basic nutrition.
While some critical services like VA benefits and Social Security payments are continuing, the longer this shutdown persists, the more Americans will suffer. It's unconscionable that some lawmakers have left Washington D.C. during this crisis, making resolution even more challenging.
I implore you to return to the negotiating table immediately and work tirelessly to reopen the government. Once the shutdown is resolved, it's crucial that you focus on extending the ACA credits. These credits are vital for ensuring that healthcare remains affordable and accessible for millions of Americans, especially during these uncertain times.
The fact that an anonymous U.S. citizen felt compelled to donate $130 million to the Pentagon to help pay military members during the shutdown is a stark illustration of how this political impasse is forcing ordinary Americans to bear the burden of governmental dysfunction.
As the second-longest shutdown in history, this situation demands your immediate attention and action. Please prioritize the needs of your constituents and the American people over political posturing. Resolve this shutdown, get back to work, and ensure that critical programs like the ACA credits are extended to protect the health and well-being of all Americans.
