Protect Transgender Students' Rights and Safety in Schools

To: Rep. Mathis, Rep. Gutierrez

From: A verified voter in Tucson, AZ

August 1, 2024

This bill, SB1166, infringes on the rights and wellbeing of transgender and non-binary students. Requiring schools to out students to their parents for using their preferred name and pronouns is a dangerous violation of privacy that could subject these youth to harm. Additionally, allowing employees to refuse to use a student's correct name and pronouns based on personal beliefs enables and institutionalizes discrimination against LGBTQ+ students. This bill actively creates an unwelcoming and hostile environment in schools. As an advocate for the health and safety of all students, I urge you to oppose this discriminatory legislation, SB1166, that targets a vulnerable population of youth. Transgender and non-binary students deserve to have their identities respected and affirmed in educational settings.
