You have the power to protect California residents from mass surveillance with Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPRs) like Flock and Axon. You can refuse to purchase or use ALPRs, and refuse federal funds for anyone else to purchase or use ALPRs in CA. You can refuse to share, purchase, receive, or use any ALPR-obtained data anywhere without a warrant (and only for felony crimes recognized under both federal and state law). You can insist that data be deleted within hours at most. You can demand gold-standard consumer privacy protections on any surveillance, such as end-to-end encryption, data minimization, informed consent, ban on sale and most transfers of data, and a right to see our own data and correct errors. Each day these cameras remain active, they violate Californian’s right to privacy and harm our ability to live and travel free from pervasive government surveillance. Get rid of the cameras now and protect us from future violations. The time to act is now. Pass legislation to rein in the use of ALPR technology. Thank you for stepping up for California residents.
