I am writing to demand immediate action to hold ICE accountable for the fatal shooting of Renee Macklin Good and to prevent further violence by federal immigration enforcement agents in our communities.
On January 7th, Renee Macklin Good was shot and killed by a federal ICE agent in Minneapolis. On January 8th, ICE agents shot two people in Portland. The Trump administration is seeking to cover up the truth by claiming these agents acted in self defense.
ICE agents have been trained for a very specific job and it is not the one they’ve most recently been deployed to do. They do not have skills or training in crowd control and clearly have not been trained to to manage situations of “self-defense” in safe, non-lethal ways. These actions and the administration’s support of ICE violence make it clear that the Trump administration and these agents do not value human life, particularly in people who differ from them in belief or identity. ICE cannot continue to be given free rein in American cities to act as an unrestrained force of violence.
ICE operates with minimal oversight and accountability, creating conditions where agents can use lethal force against civilians without consequence. The federal government must not be permitted to conduct enforcement operations in our communities that result in injury or death.
I urge you to take concrete action:
-publicly condemn these acts of violence
-demand a full independent investigation into the circumstances of Renee Good’s death
-call for the prosecution of ICE agents responsible for violent action
-support legislation that restricts ICE's authority to conduct armed enforcement operations in residential areas.
American communities deserve protection from federal agents who treat our neighborhoods as war zones. I expect you to stand with your constituents and demand accountability for this killing and other continued acts of violence made by ICE agents.
