I am writing as your constituent to express my deep concern about the renewed Jeffrey Epstein investigation and the appointment of Jay Clayton to lead it. Recent developments suggest a troubling pattern of partisan interference in this case, which risks undermining public trust in the integrity of our justice system. I urge you to stand up for impartial justice and ensure that high-profile investigations like this are conducted without political bias. In June 2020, the Trump Administration attempted to replace Geoffrey Berman, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, with Jay Clayton at a time when Mr. Berman's office was actively overseeing the Epstein sex-trafficking investigation as well as other politically sensitive cases involving President Trump's associates. Mr. Berman refused to step down voluntarily, pushing back against what appeared to be improper political intervention. This attempted ouster of Berman immediately raised red flags across the political spectrum. In fact, leaders in both parties voiced alarm. Republican Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham pledged to honor the "blue-slip" tradition, effectively blocking Clayton's nomination absent approval from New York's Democratic senators, and Democratic lawmakers condemned Berman's removal as a gross abuse of power and a brazen effort to interfere in sensitive investigations. Amid this bipartisan backlash, the plan to install Mr. Clayton was abandoned, preserving the independence of ongoing cases at that time. Now, five years later, I am alarmed to see history potentially repeating itself. President Donald Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi have appointed Jay Clayton to lead a renewed probe into the Epstein files. Disturbingly, their own public comments indicate that this investigation is being steered in a blatantly one-sided manner, targeting only individuals affiliated with one political party. Attorney General Bondi's announcement explicitly stated that the new probe will focus on Epstein's ties to Mr. Trump's political foes, including former President Bill Clinton. President Trump himself has made clear he views the Epstein case chiefly as a weapon against his opponents, declaring on social media that Epstein was a Democrat, and he is the Democrat's problem, not the Republican's problem. Do not waste your time with Trump. In other words, the administration has signaled an intention to pursue only Democrats in this matter, while pointedly ignoring any Republican involvement, despite the fact that Mr. Trump and others in his circle had known associations with Epstein in the past. Such an overtly partisan approach is deeply corrosive to public trust in the fairness of our justice system. The Department of Justice is supposed to pursue the facts without fear or favor, but here we have top officials essentially pre-judging the investigation's targets based on politics. This not only undermines the credibility of any findings, but also further politicizes the Department of Justice at a time when its independence is already in question. Legal experts have warned that using federal law enforcement to go after specific individuals because they are political adversaries is outrageously inappropriate. That is not how it is supposed to work, as one former prosecutor put it. Even judges can throw out cases that appear to be motivated by vindictive prosecution. Indeed, the Department's quick acquiescence to President Trump's demands in this Epstein inquiry is viewed as yet the latest example of an erosion of the Justice Department's traditional independence from the White House. No matter one's party affiliation, we should all be able to agree that justice must be even-handed and immune from political vendettas. I respectfully ask you, as my elected representative, to speak out against the partisan manipulation of this high-profile investigation and to actively support robust oversight of the Department of Justice.
