Child marriage is a serious human rights violation that robs children of their childhood and denies them access to education and opportunities for personal growth and development. It perpetuates cycles of poverty, domestic violence, and poor health outcomes. We must take urgent action to protect all children from this harmful practice. North Carolina currently allows children as young as 14 to be married with judicial approval, and 16 and 17-year-olds can marry with parental consent. This legal loophole enables child marriage to persist. I urge you to introduce legislation to completely ban marriage under the age of 18, with no exceptions. Protecting children from forced marriage should be a top priority. Every child deserves the chance to reach adulthood before entering into the profound commitment of marriage.
