Urgent Investigation Needed: Trump-Branded Cell Service and Smartphone Scam

To: Sen. Curtis, Rep. Maloy, Sen. Lee

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

November 28

I am writing to express my deep concern and urge immediate action regarding the potentially fraudulent Trump-branded cell service and Trump T1 smartphone. Launched in June with great fanfare, these products have failed to materialize five months later, raising serious questions about consumer protection and potential scams targeting American citizens. The situation demands urgent investigation by both the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Here are the key issues that warrant immediate scrutiny: 1. False Advertising: The Trump T1 phone was advertised as American-made and priced at $499, with a $47 monthly fee for Trump Mobile service. However, references to U.S. manufacturing have since disappeared from the website, suggesting potential false claims about the product's origin. 2. Failure to Deliver: Despite accepting $100 deposits from customers in August, the company has failed to provide any updates or deliver the promised products. This behavior is indicative of potential fraud. 3. Misleading Customer Service: When contacted, customer service representatives have provided shifting timelines and dubious excuses, including blaming the government shutdown for delays. This pattern of misinformation further erodes consumer trust. 4. Questionable Business Practices: The Trump Mobile service has been revealed to be merely a licensing deal with Liberty Mobile Wireless, operating on T-Mobile's network. This lack of transparency raises concerns about the true nature of the business. 5. History of Failed Ventures: Given the track record of other failed Trump ventures like Trump University, there is a pressing need to protect consumers from potential financial harm. I urge you to initiate a thorough investigation into these practices immediately. American consumers deserve protection from misleading advertising and potential scams, especially those that exploit political affiliations for financial gain. Swift action by the FTC and FCC is crucial to prevent further harm and hold accountable those responsible for these deceptive practices. Thank you for your prompt attention to this critical consumer protection issue.
