Oppose U.S. Assistance for Saudi Arabia’s Nuclear Program

To: Rep. McCollum, Sen. Smith, Sen. Klobuchar

From: A constituent in Lake Elmo, MN

July 22

Dear Representative, I am writing to urge you to oppose any U.S. effort to assist Saudi Arabia in developing a civilian nuclear program unless it includes the strongest possible safeguards and congressional oversight. While Saudi Arabia is an important strategic partner, nuclear technology carries long-term security risks that extend far beyond any single administration. I am concerned that providing nuclear capabilities without strict limits on uranium enrichment and spent fuel reprocessing could increase the risk of nuclear weapons proliferation in an already unstable region. Any agreement should meet the highest nonproliferation standards and be fully transparent to Congress and the American people. I also believe the United States should carefully consider Saudi Arabia’s human rights record and regional policies before entering into any nuclear cooperation agreement. Sharing sensitive nuclear technology should require clear evidence that it advances U.S. security interests while protecting global stability. If a civilian nuclear agreement is considered, it should require robust International Atomic Energy Agency inspections, prohibit domestic enrichment and reprocessing, and include enforceable consequences for any violations. Congress should have the opportunity to thoroughly review and debate any proposed agreement before it takes effect. Our nation has long been a leader in preventing the spread of nuclear weapons. I ask you to uphold that tradition by opposing any agreement that weakens nonproliferation standards or creates unnecessary security risks. Thank you for your service and for considering my views. I hope you will prioritize America’s security and global nuclear nonproliferation in your decision-making.
