Call to condemn “good television” as unamerican

To: Rep. Webster

From: A verified voter in Orlando, FL

March 1

I am writing to ask you to, on behalf of your constituents and all freedom-loving Americans, condemn the shameful way that President Trump and Vice President Vance treated Ukrainian President Zelenskyy on February 28, 2025. It has only been fifty years since the end of the Un-American Activities Committee and I’m sure that Ronald Regan would be absolutely appalled to see how his former office was repeating Russian propaganda lies and painting Russia’s dictator as a victim of the country that Russia itself invaded in an aggressive and unprovoked manner. Even if you believe that the U.S. does not need to be involved in a war where a large autocratic nation is attempting to overtake a small democratic nation, there is no reasonable defense on earth for how Present Trump and Vice President Vance spoke to — and over — President Zelenskyy in such an angry and emotional fashion. This reminds me of your attack on the First Amendment rights of Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde in House Resolution 59, where you and others whose feelings got hurt because her request for mercy from the President on behalf of vulnerable communities — which was neither defamatory nor inciting — showcased the stark contrast between how Jesus has called us to live and how President Trump has been gathering power into himself at the expense of the least of these. Except, I have an unfortunate suspicion that you will not stand up to President Trump in this manner, because you have already sold your political soul to him. It’s easy to disparage a soft-spoken minister in a manner that, while not a law, is subject to constitutional scrutiny in this situation (also, to be frank, why would the House waste its time on this performance when there are other pressing national issues to address?); it’s difficult to admit that your support of the power whose history and core are completely at odds with the faith you profess to hold has been a mistake. Rep. Webster, please consider how the end of all this may play out. If America abandons Ukraine and Russia violently prevails, what then? It has not even been one hundred years since the Munich Agreement; surely you are not naive enough to believe that Russia will be sated by Ukraine. I understand that you have not served in the military and — I could be wrong about this as it was difficult to verify — I don’t believe you have children in the military either. My husband is in the military; how will your office support myself and our two small girls when America is forced to mobilize troops due to shortsighted and emotional refusals to help support Ukraine’s sovereignty leads to expanding Russian aggression?
