I urge you to co-sponsor and vote for the Abolish Super PACs Act (S.4602/H.R.2352), introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Summer Lee. This legislation is essential to restoring democracy and rebuilding public trust in our electoral system. We have a vivid real-world example of why this bill cannot wait. Billionaire Elon Musk donated $158 million to super PACs supporting Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's Senate campaign. Within days of each contribution, the Senate Leadership Fund transferred identical amounts to a pro-Paxton group. When a single donor can outspend a candidate's own campaign, our democracy is turned upside down. We drift toward one dollar, one vote instead of one person, one vote. Since Citizens United, super PACs have created a two-tiered system in which billionaires exert extraordinary influence over which candidates remain viable. During the 2024 cycle, dark-money groups and independent expenditure committees spent over $4.6 billion. The concentration of political power in wealthy hands destroys public confidence. Only 17 percent of Americans trust Washington, and just 29 percent believe democracy works. When voters conclude billionaires matter more than their votes, they disengage. Lower participation makes officials more dependent on mega-donors and less responsive to constituents. Critics claim this legislation violates free speech, but that argument fails. The Supreme Court has upheld reasonable contribution limits. The Abolish Super PACs Act limits super PAC contributions to $5,000 per individual annually, not political expression itself. Other democracies demonstrate that strong campaign finance protections are compatible with vibrant elections. Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany maintain meaningful limits on political spending while protecting robust democratic participation. Super PACs also determine which issues receive attention. Universal health care, climate action, and gun safety reforms often face opposition when they threaten mega-donor interests. Meanwhile, tax cuts for billionaires advance with little resistance. That is not government responding to the public. It is government responding to concentrated financial power. Congress must act now to reduce the grip of money on American politics. The Abolish Super PACs Act is a fair, constitutional, and necessary step toward ensuring every voter has a meaningful voice in our democracy. I respectfully urge you to co-sponsor this legislation and vote for its passage.
