I am writing to ask you to oppose any legislation, settlement structure, or federal funding mechanism that would allow taxpayer money to be used as compensation for individuals involved in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. I understand that some proposals are being framed as compensation for people who were allegedly targeted by government “weaponization.” I do not object to legitimate oversight of government misconduct, and I believe anyone truly wronged by the federal government should have access to fair legal remedies. However, I strongly object to creating or supporting a broad fund that could be used to reward political allies, pardon recipients, or individuals who participated in an attack on Congress and law enforcement. Taxpayer money should not be used to compensate people who helped disrupt the peaceful transfer of power, endangered police officers, damaged public property, or attempted to interfere with the constitutional process. Even the possibility that such a fund could benefit January 6 participants is deeply troubling. My concern is also about accountability and precedent. If Congress allows politically connected individuals to receive compensation through a loosely defined fund, especially one connected to a president’s personal or political grievances, it undermines public trust in the justice system. It also sends the wrong message: that political violence can later be reframed as victimhood and rewarded with public money. If there are genuine cases of government abuse, they should be handled through transparent, neutral, and court-supervised processes with clear standards of proof. They should not be handled through a politically controlled fund with vague eligibility and insufficient independent oversight. Please oppose any effort to use federal funds for this purpose, and please support legislation that prevents taxpayer money from being distributed to January 6 participants or others who engaged in political violence against the United States government.
