Protect Free Speech on the Internet

To: Sen. Scott, Rep. Buchanan, Sen. Moody

From: A constituent in Parrish, FL

March 28

The message should call attention to the vital role Section 230 plays in safeguarding freedom of expression online and empowering users, not just large tech companies. Section 230 shields individual internet users, bloggers, online communities, and small businesses from costly litigation over third-party content they didn't create. Stripping away these protections would cripple ordinary people's ability to speak freely on the internet. The law incentivizes platforms to moderate objectionable content without fear of liability for their moderation decisions. Repealing Section 230 would ironically lead to more offensive material remaining online, as platforms would face legal risk for any content removal. Rather than cracking down on objectionable speech, gutting this law would consolidate the dominance of a few major tech giants able to absorb litigation costs, stifling competition and diversity of online voices. Preserving Section 230 upholds core American values of free expression for all in the digital public square.
