Three steps Only YOU can take to resist Fascism

To: Rep. McClellan, Sen. Warner, Sen. Kaine

February 13, 2025

I am writing to you as a concerned constituent who believes in the fundamental principles of democracy and the rule of law. Recent developments indicate an alarming power grab by the current president of the United States and his allies, posing a direct threat to our democratic institutions. In this critical moment, I urge you and your colleagues to take every available measure to oppose this assault on our democracy. There is a guide put out by The Indivisible Project which outlines three steps you can take as my representative to buy your constituents time to resist and build systems to care for the most vulnerable members of your community. You can find the full text of the guide here: https://indivisible.org/resource/explainer-how-senate-democrats-can-delay-defy-trumps-agenda-procedural-hardball  Specifically, I call on you to: 1. Vote NO on Every Trump Nominee: No Trump nominee should be confirmed while this crisis persists. Every nominee is a vote of confidence in Trump’s anti-democratic agenda. Democrats must refuse to rubber-stamp this power grab by voting NO on all nominations. Even if Democrats lack the majority to block every appointment, unity in opposition sends a powerful message and increases pressure on Republican ranks. 2. Weaponize Quorum Calls: Utilize procedural tools to prevent Senate business from proceeding without a majority present. By demanding quorum calls and walking out when necessary, Democrats can disrupt the Senate and prevent the smooth advancement of Trump’s dangerous agenda. 3. Block Unanimous Consent: Object to every unanimous consent request. Refusing procedural shortcuts forces Republicans to engage in time-consuming processes for every action, slowing down their efforts to consolidate power. These tactics are not merely procedural; they are vital defenses against an unprecedented threat to our country. This administration’s agenda is deeply unpopular, and his strategy relies on speed to avoid public scrutiny. By slowing down Congress, you can create the time and space necessary for public pressure to mount against this authoritarian power grab. Please stand firm. Use every tool available to defend our democracy. Your constituents are watching and counting on your leadership in this perilous moment. Thank you for your time and your commitment to upholding the values we all cherish.
