The Arrest of Judge Dugan Threatens Judicial Independence
To: Justices Court
From: A constituent in Westfield, MA
April 25, 2025
I write to you today not only as a citizen, but as someone who believes deeply in the sanctity of the judiciary, the rule of law, and the promise of justice that this Court represents. The recent arrest of Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan by federal agents has shaken me to my core.
To witness a sitting judge—one entrusted with upholding justice—be arrested under allegations of obstructing immigration enforcement is both disturbing and deeply troubling. Whether one agrees or disagrees with her alleged actions, the implications of this arrest are profound. It touches on judicial independence, the limits of federal power, and the increasingly blurred lines between law enforcement and political agenda.
This moment calls not for silence, but for reflection and action. I urge this Court to recognize the weight of what has occurred and consider the long-term consequences to public trust in our justice system. If judges—our last defense against political overreach—can be punished in this way, where does it end?
I ask this Court to do what it can within its authority to protect judicial independence and to speak, where appropriate, to ensure that our nation does not cross a line from justice into intimidation.
With hope for clarity, accountability, and courage,
